Humanitarian aid helps ensure residents can meet their basic needs for food and shelter, to protect themselves against disease.įurther compounding the dangers facing flood-affected survivors is the water itself, which is contaminated with sewage, trash and debris, and dead livestock. One-third of Pakistan is underwater, and one in seven people have been affected. The devastation is catastrophic, with tens of millions of vulnerable people homeless, uprooted from their communities, and facing disease, hunger, and psychological distress. Transportation routes and lines of communication have been disrupted, endangering survivors who are fleeing the floods to seek safety and assistance. The most affected have been the regions of Balochistan, Sindh, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Punjab where nearly one million homes, some 800,000 livestock, 3,000 km of roadway and more than 150 bridges have been damaged or destroyed.
